Spanish Majors Design New Course for First Responders

Recent graduates Marc Blatt (CLAS 2017) and Sabhi Singh (CLAS 2017), both Jefferson Scholars and Spanish majors, spent their final year at UVa determining how to give back to the community and improve the world around them.

Department Graduation Ceremony

The department ceremony for the Department of Spanish, Italian & Portuguese will be in the Culbreth Theatre (the Drama Building) at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 20.

The ceremony will be in this location regardless of the weather.

Tickets are required to enter the theatre and the number of tickets each graduate will receive will be determined in early March, 2017. 

Centro de las Américas Public Lecture: Sugar, Knowledge, and the History of Capitalism

Please join us on Friday, May 5, at 2 pm in Hotel A (Center for Global Inquiry & Innovation) for a public lecture by David Singerman, Americas Center/Centro de las Américas, Visiting Scholar.

The talk, '"En la producción azucarera todo está metrificado': Sugar, Knowledge, and The History of Capitalism,” will be followed by a reception.

Davide Domenici: Color and Codices in DH Studies

On Thursday, April 27, Professor Davide Domenici (University of Bologna) will speak with undergraduate and graduate students in Latin American Digital Humanities (SPAN 7559/4993) and Indigenous North American Arts (ARTH 3595, Arts Practicum). Please join us in Alderman 317 from 11-12:15 pm to learn about new research into the Mesoamerican writing systems, spiritualities, and color symbolism.

Please join us on Thursday, May 4, from 2:30-4 pm in Wilson 142 for a roundtable discussion with Professor Davide Domenici (Dipartimento di Storia Culture Civiltà/Department of History, Culture, and Civilization, University of Bologna).

As part of Professor Domenici's week-long visit to UVa, sponsored by the Institute of the Humanities & Global Cultures, we'll discuss "Material Indians: Early Modern Circulation of Ethnographica and the Construction of the Indies as a Global Category."
