The Department of Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese offers two types of proficiency certification for graduate students and undergraduate students at UVa.
Graduate students who need to demonstrate reading competency in a language other than English should click here for information on the proficiency and mastery exams.
Undergraduate students who need to certify language skills for job interviews, graduate school applications, or programs that require language evaluations (e.g., Fulbright) will take a mastery exam in the target language, modified to include assessments of their speaking and listening skills. Students should contact the coordinator for the language in which they are examining: Director of Undergraduate Programs (Spanish), Director of the 1000- and 2000-level Courses (Italian), or Director of the Portuguese Program (Portuguese).
