Shawn Austin, "From Warriors to Soldiers: Indigenous Mission Militias and Cultures of Violence in the Río de la Plata via Guaraní Worlds"

Please join us on Thursday, Nov. 17, from 4-5:30 pm in Hotel A (Center for Global Inquiry and Innovation) for a talk by Shawn Austin (History, University of Arkansas). Professor Austin's lecture, "From Warriors to Soldiers: Indigenous Mission Militias and Cultures of Violence in the Río de la Plata via Guaraní Worlds," uses Guaraní-language documents to consider how colonized Indigenous people used violence to advance their own interests under Spanish colonial rule. In so doing, he is disrupting conventional stories of the role that violence played in colonial contexts and underscoring the importance of training in Indigenous languages to conduct research. The talk will be followed by a reception.

Sponsored by the Concoran Department of History, CGII, and Department of Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese
