The Department of Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese stands in solidarity with faculty, students, and citizens of Peru following the impeachment of President Martín Vizcarra, the appointment of interim President Manuel Merino, and the resignation of the latter. We deplore the police violence used against citizens – many of whom are university students – in peaceful protests, and we join calls in Peru and around the world for a peaceful solution. We say the names of the two young people, Inti Sotelo (24 years old) and Jack Pintado (22 years old), who were killed in recent days; we mourn their deaths, the injury of an untold number of women and men, and the disappearance of dozens of citizens. We write this statement to amplify the voices of students and faculty in Peru who seek global visibility and support for their peaceful cause.
La facultad de castellano, italiano y portugués afirma su solidaridad con las/los/lxs profesores, estudiantes y ciudadanos del Perú tras la destitución del presidente Martín Vizcarra, el nombramiento del presidente de transición Manuel Merino y la dimisión de este último. Rechazamos el uso de la violencia estatal contra los ciudadanos en las manifestaciones pacíficas, las cuales han sido organizadas principalmente por estudiantes universitarios. Unimos nuestra voz a la del pueblo peruano y la comunidad mundial para demandar una solución pacífica. Queremos recordar aquí los nombres de los jóvenes muertos, Inti Sotelo (24 años) y Jack Pintado (22 años). Lamentamos dichos fallecimientos, el daño sufrido por los miles de personas que han resultado heridas y la desaparición de muchos – demasiados – peruanos. Escribimos estas palabras para hacernos eco de la causa de lxs estudiantes y profesores del Perú que buscan visibilidad y apoyo mundial por su causa pacífica.
