Biography
David Flórez-Murillo is originally from Colombia. He earned his B.A. in English Language from Universidad Tecnológica de Pereira, where he trained in teaching English as a foreign language and qualitative research methods. For his B.A. research project, David conducted a study on implementing cultural content in the college-level EFL curriculum.
After seven years of lecturing at various universities in Colombia, David moved to the United States to pursue an M.A. in Formal Linguistics at West Virginia University. As part of his graduate work, he researched several aspects of Hispanic linguistics, including contrasts in intonational patterns among Spanish varieties in Colombia, social perceptions triggered by prosodic cues, and the neutralization of the /n/ segment to [m]—a rare and under-documented phenomenon in the Hispanic world. David also taught Spanish at West Virginia University for two years before joining the faculty at UVA.
Recently, David chaired the organizing committee for the Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese Film Festival, which used to take place each spring, and he currently serves as Course Coordinator for Spanish Advanced Intermediate (SPAN 2020).
