Biography

David Flórez-Murillo is originally from Colombia. He earned his B.A. in English Language from Universidad Tecnológica de Pereira, where he specialized in teaching English as a foreign language and qualitative research methods. For his undergraduate research project, he examined the integration of cultural content into the college-level EFL curriculum.

After seven years of teaching at various Colombian universities, David moved to the United States to pursue an M.A. in Linguistics at West Virginia University. His graduate research focused on Hispanic linguistics, including intonational contrasts among Colombian Spanish varieties, the role of prosodic cues in shaping social perceptions, and the rare phenomenon of /n/ neutralization to [m] in Spanish. While at WVU, he also taught Spanish for two years before joining the faculty at the University of Virginia.

David currently serves as Course Coordinator for Advanced Intermediate Spanish (SPAN 2020) and has chaired in the past the organizing committee for the Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese Film Festival (discontinued). He is also part of the department’s initiative to develop a Spanish Open Educational Resource (OER) after receiving a VIVA grant from the State of Virginia. His teaching and research continue to reflect his interest in the intersections of language, culture, social justice, and pedagogy.
