Cervantes at UVA

Cervantes at UVA is a cultural and academic initiative of the University of Virginia, developed through the collaboration of the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, the Department of Spanish, Italian & Portuguese, and Instituto Cervantes.

Created following the 2023 agreement between UVA and Instituto Cervantes, it strengthens the University’s commitment to the Spanish language and the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. The initiative is directed by Dr. Fernando Valverde, Associate Professor of Spanish and Cervantes Professor at UVA.

Through readings, lectures, conferences, performances, and international partnerships, Cervantes at UVA brings leading writers, artists, and scholars to Charlottesville and creates spaces for dialogue among the University, its students, and the wider community.

DELE Examinations at UVA

Cervantes at UVA also coordinates the University of Virginia’s DELE Examination Center, directed by Professor Nieves García Prados. DELE (Diploma de Español como Lengua Extranjera) is the official diploma of Spanish-language proficiency issued by Instituto Cervantes on behalf of Spain’s Ministry of Education. Recognized internationally by universities, employers, and public institutions, it certifies proficiency according to the levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and does not expire.

As an officially recognized examination center within the Instituto Cervantes network, UVA offers members of the University and the wider community the opportunity to obtain this internationally respected qualification in Charlottesville.
