Fernando Valverde, Book presentation: America (2021)

On Friday, Oct. 1, please join us at the New Dominion bookstore on the downtown mall at 7 pm to celebrate the publication of Fernando Valverde's latest book of poetry, America (Copper Canyon, 2021). Sam Amago, department chair, will introduce Fernando, who will read selections from the book. America, translated by renowned poet Carolyn Forché, is described as "mournfully lyrical, politically sharp, with a sweeping view of American roots, dysfunctions, and ideals―as if from above, and yet also from within," effectively deconstructing "the legacy of empire" and grieving without shying away from "all that is lost to greed and a culture of violence, painting an urgent portrait of 'the thirst of America / a smile satisfied to death.'”
