La Sociedad Nacional Honoraria Hispánica

October 6, 2021

UVA's Zeta Zeta Chapter of Sigma Delta Pi is accepting applications for new members. If you are interested in promoting Hispanic Literatures and Cultures and have met the membership requirements (see below), Sigma Delta Pi is for you. Some of the most notable benefits are developing relationships with fellow like-minded UVA Spanish majors and minors, and the opportunity for national awards, grants, and scholarships, which can facilitate study abroad programs and provide money for graduate research grants.

Sigma Delta Pi, the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society, is a non-profit organization incorporated in South Carolina, a member of the Association of College Honor Societies, and partners with the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese and North American Academy of the Spanish Language. It was founded at the University of California, Berkeley, in 1919. With over 600 chapters nationwide, Sigma Delta Pi is a greatly respected and valued honor society.

Attached you will find a membership application. Please email (mjs9sj@virginia.edu) the completed application and a copy of your unofficial transcript by Wednesday, October 20. The application form is on the Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese websites by following the Download Forms link. After the application deadline (Wednesday, October 20), you will participate in a mandatory initiation ceremony (Thursday, November 4 at 5:30 p.m.). Per Sigma Delta Pi National, no one can be initiated in absentia, so please confirm that you will be able to attend the initiation ceremony. You will receive credentials that certify you as a lifetime member of Sigma Delta Pi at the ceremony. Before applying for membership, please read the requirements detailed below.

  • Each must have completed three years of study of college-level Spanish (eighteen semester credit hours) or the equivalent thereof, including at least three semester hours of a course in Hispanic literature or Hispanic culture and civilization (third-year) 3000 level. This 3000 level course must be after the pre-requisite courses needed to declare a Spanish major. A student may be admitted to active membership while still enrolled in the 3000 level course if all other requirements have been met and if the instructor certifies that the student's work is of "B" or "A" quality.
  • The candidate for active membership must have a minimum grade point average of 3.2 on a 4.0-point scale in all Spanish courses taken.
  • The candidate must rank in the upper 35% (3.2 GPA) of his/her class and must have completed at least three semesters.
  • Graduate students who have been unconditionally admitted to a degree-granting program may be elected to membership upon completion of two graduate courses in Spanish with an average, which, if continued, will make them eligible for a graduate degree.
  • Sigma Delta Pi does not discriminate based on race, color, national or ethnic origin, sex, age, or disability.
  • If accepted to membership, there is a one-time membership fee of 40 dollars.
