Black Lives Matter: Department Statement of Solidarity

June 3, 2020

The Department of Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese at the University of Virginia stands united with our students, University colleagues, and Charlottesville community members against racism, police brutality, and the historical oppression of Black and Indigenous people. We join the national call to reject systemic bias and violence against all People of Color. At this moment in particular—amidst anti-Hispanic and Latinx discrimination in the U. S., and the long history of dehumanization of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color globally—we commit ourselves to social justice and a pedagogy of compassion. This Department’s mission is to research, teach, and build programs oriented towards intercultural understanding and global education. #BlackLivesMatter
