Ajpub' Pablo García Ixmatá (Tz'utujil): Global Mentor Events, Spring 2021

As part of a new initiative launched in the Office of Vice Provost for Global Affairs, UVA is welcoming six Global Mentors to collaborate with students and faculty in globally-oriented research, teaching, and community engagement. The Department of Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese is thrilled to announce that Maya Tz'utujil scholar Ajpub' Pablo García Ixmatá will form part of the inaugural class of Global Mentors. García Ixmatá is a professor of Maya linguistics, sociolinguistics, and history at the Universidad Rafael Landívar and Fundación Proyecto Lingüístico Francisco Marroquín in Antigua, Guatemala, and a collaborator at UVA's Multepal Project. He is the author and co-author of 7 books of Mayan language, linguistics, and pedagogy, and the author and co-author of many more book chapters and articles on Indigenous knowledge, landscape, and history.

During his virtual residency at UVA in Spring 2021, professor García Ixmatá will speak with students in SPAN 3420 (Survey of Colonial Latin America) in February, hold office hours for students across Grounds in March, and deliver a public lecture in April at the Institute of Humanities and Global Cultures as part of a roundtable on Indigenous Studies and the Digital Humanities.
