Tricontinental Acts of Solidarity Film Screening

Tricontinental Acts of Solidarity Film Screening of  De cierta manera (One Way or Another) (1977), the last film and celebrated masterpiece of Afro-Cuban filmmaker Sara Gómez. The film takes place in revolutionary Cuba of the 1960s. Intercutting documentary-style footage with a fictional love story, Gómez creates an intimate portrait of a couple amid a transforming society.

The screening of Gómez's film will open with one of Santiago Álvarez's newsreels, which played in Cuban theaters prior to feature films. This screening of Álvarez's Movimiento Panteras Negras (The Black Panther Movement) (1968) will be the second time that this short film has been shown in the United States.

Discussion with UVa professors Anne Garland Mahler (Spanish, Italian, & Portuguese) and Nzingha Kendall (Woodson Institute for African-American and African Studies) will follow.

This event is free and open to the public and there will be food! Here is the Facebook event: https://www.facebook.com/events/2467257216864890/
