Master of Arts (M.A.) Program

A terminal, stand-alone Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in Spanish is only offered to self-supporting students.

The program of study for the Doctorate of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Spanish incorporates an en-route M.A. in Spanish for those students entering the program with a B.A. degree. Please see the page describing the Ph.D. in Spanish for full details.

The requirements for the Master of Arts (M.A.) degree are outlined in The Graduate Record and include:

  • Thirty credits of courses at the 5200 level or above, at least twelve of which must be at the 7000 level or above; none of the thirty credit hours may be derived from non-topical research.
  • SPAN 7220 (History of the Language) and SPAN 8210 (Teaching Foreign Languages) are required courses.
  • Completion of the comprehensive written examinations and a one-hour oral examination based exclusively on the departmental M.A. reading list.
  • The written and oral examinations are based exclusively on the departmental M.A. reading list.
