Minoring in Spanish

Admission to the Spanish Minor is by application only.  Applications are accepted in the fall and spring semesters. The deadlines are October 1 and February 1. There is no formal application form.

Please keep the following in mind: 

1. You must have a declared major before declaring a minor.

2. You may NOT declare a Spanish major and a Spanish minor.

In order to apply, please send an email from your U.Va. address to the Spanish Minor Advisor. State your current academic year, your expected year of graduation, and your overall GPA, then provide a 300-word statement explaining how a Spanish minor fits into your broader academic plans.

Accepted students must then meet with the Spanish Minor Advisor to discuss the minor and get the declaration form signed. Once signed by the Spanish Minor Advisor, students should submit the declaration form to the registrar of their School.  

Minor in Spanish (General)

A minor in Spanish consists of 21 credits (3 prerequisite and 18 required) of Spanish study at the 3000 level or above.

1.  Prerequisite: SPAN 3010 with grade of B- or better

2.  SPAN 3300, Texts and Interpretation

3.  One survey course (SPAN 3400s)

4.  One 3000-level elective

  • A 3000-level language course can be taken simultaneously with SPAN 3300
  • An additional survey (3400) may only be taken after 3300 is completed, but can be taken simultaneously with the survey taken to satisfy requirement (3)

5.  A 4000-level elective

6.  A 4000-level elective

7.  A 4000-level elective

Students may count up to nine hours of credit earned in an approved study abroad program toward their Spanish minor. The restriction to nine hours does not apply to coursework done in UVA’s Hispanic Studies Program in Valencia. Since those courses earn UVA credit, they are considered interchangeable with courses taken in Charlottesville.

Minor in Spanish (Business)

The department, in conjunction with UVA Hispanic Studies in Valencia, Spain, offers a Minor in Business Spanish consisting of six (6) courses in addition to an internship or attendance at business symposia in Valencia. Please note that three of the courses (two of which are required), as well as the internships and symposia, are only offered in Valencia.

Please keep the following in mind:

2. You may NOT declare a Spanish major and a Business Spanish minor.

After reviewing the requirements on this page, you will need to meet with the Business Minor Advisor to discuss the minor and get the declaration form signed. This should be done at the beginning of the course of minor study. Once signed by the Spanish Minor Advisor, students should submit the declaration form to the registrar of their School.

Requirements for the Business Spanish Minor

Prerequisite: 3010 Grammar Review (MUST be taken before declaring the Business Spanish Minor)

1. SPAN 3300 - Texts and Interpretation (Charlottesville and Valencia)

2. SPAN 3040 - Business Spanish (Charlottesville and Valencia)

3. SPAN 4040 - Translation (Charlottesville and Valencia)

4. SPAN 4713 - Economy of the European Union (Valencia)

5. One of the following:

a. SPAN 4710 - Latin American Culture and Civilization (Charlottesville and Valencia)  or

b. SPAN 4700 - Spanish Culture and Civilization (Charlottesville and Valencia)

6. One of the following:

a. SPAN 4705 - Spanish Mass Media (Valencia)  or

b. SPAN 4050 - Global Integration of Latin America (Valencia)  Note: The prerequisite for this class is SPAN 3040; this class includes a business symposia or internship.
